BEING AWAY: Before Keyshia Cole enthralled R&B with her raw, agony-edged vocals, there was Sunshine Anderson. The songstress sold more than 700,000 copies of her 2001 debut, Your Woman, off the strength of her scorned-woman anthem, "Heard It All Before." But when her label, Atlantic, merged with Warner Bros., Woman's follow-up was left on the back burner. Now, Ms. Anderson is again bringing the heat with her soulful sophomore set.
A LITTLE SUNSHINE: Ms. Anderson's warm, gritty alto and co-writing are a perfect complement to Mike City's production prowess. The Chi-Lites-sampling first single, "Something I Wanna Give You," is another "hit the curb" number ("Get your hat, get your knapsack, get your lazy [expletive] up off of my couch"), and the empowering club banger "Switch It Up" tells ladies to go out and do their own thing instead of stressing over that no-good man. There are also the crazy-in-love moments, such as the Raphael Saadiq contribution "Wear the Crown" and "Force of Nature," in which she acknowledges that her momma doesn't approve of her roughneck Romeo.
BOTTOM LINE: Midnight proves that even as she was threatened with the darkness of obscurity, Ms. Anderson was right to believe that she could still gleam brightly amongst her peers. Pour on the sunscreen and grab the shades, because this Sunshine is hot.
